Reahus
The history of Reahûs is closely related to the history of the Roman Catholic parish and the Reformation. The village originated in the 17th century as a hamlet near Oosterend after the Reformation. During that time, Catholics were forbidden to openly practice their faith. So, in 1709, believers took refuge in a clandestine church, a house on the Slypstervaart on the Oude Pôle. After this hiding place was transformed into a church with red roof tiles, it was called the Red House. Only at the end of the 19th century, when Roman Catholic churches were allowed to be built again, the current neo-Gothic church, Sint Martinus, was erected (1892), and several houses were built around this church.
