Oudemirdum (or Aldemardum as we say here in Friesland) is the green heart of Gaasterland. You'll be enthralled by the raised 'cliffs' along the IJsselmeer, where soft moss invites you to take a spontaneous break in the sun. Or why not delve into the history of the village, in the church and the Alde Buorren old hamlets. Oudemirdum is alive! There are plenty of fun shops and pavement cafés for a bite to eat and a drink. WANDERING AROUND RIJSTERBOS WOODS

Majestic woods full of age-old trees and stately lanes located on the IJsselmeer lake are inhabited by badgers and deer. Feathered friends found here include the buzzard, great spotted woodpecker, nightingale and owls. There are a number of walking options: simply follow the red or blue routes, or discover the 'witches and toadstools' route. Or simply wander around as you fancy. And don't forget the winding path along the Sudfinsterpolder that offers amazing green views. The routes are also suitable for mountain biking or horse riding.

    Een natuurgebied in Oudemirdum.

    Oudemirdumer klif is one of the natural raised ridges in the National Landscape of Southwest Friesland. Besides impressive countryside, there are also many historic elements in the landscape. Some are clearly visible to everyone, but some can be subtle and secluded, explains landscape and nature photographer Jan Tijsma.
