Boazum was founded on an extensive mound connected to a watercourse that flowed into the Middle Sea.
Despite its ample size, the village later started developing beyond the mound. The Saint Martin's Church, built in the 12th century, is among the oldest Romanesque church buildings in Friesland. During the restoration in 1941, a painting known as Majestas Domini was discovered in the vault.
