Mantgum has its origin on a mound on the western bank of the Middle Sea, of which a portion was later excavated. Between 1908 and 1984, Mantgum served as the main town of the Baarderadeel municipality.
The Mariakerk in Mantgum dates back to around 1500. This church replaced an older one built around 1200.
