12 Special Space Places
You will encounter magical and unique places along two Frisian lakes, through the forests of Gaasterland, to the IJsselmeer coast, and the vastness of the Greidhoek. With this cycling route, you'll discover the entire Waterland of Friesland. At twelve special locations, you can take a break, read a (Frisian) poem, and listen to a podcast at some locations. Here, you'll experience peace and space, allowing you to connect with yourself.

Along the way, you'll pass through Eleven Cities such as Stavoren, Hindeloopen, and Workum. Take a moment to step off your bike and soak in the atmosphere. During the journey, you'll encounter three ferries, which operate daily in the summer. It's advisable to bring cash for these.

Multi-day Route
You can split the route into two stages:

The southern loop: Nannewiid, Joure, Laaksum, and Sandfirden
The northern loop: Westhem, Makkum, Skrins, and Sneekermeer

Sights on this route

The Nannewiid

The Nannewiid, along with the Douwe Pôlle and the Lytse Wiid, is a valuable natural area. Originally, it was a marshy wilderness. It transformed when peat diggers from Giethoorn extracted peat here.

Makkumerzuidwaard Nature Reserve

Along the shore of Lake IJsselmeer there are three nature reserves on the sandflats outside the dykes. When Lake IJsselmeer was still the Zuiderzee, these coastal sandflats were flooded by the tides.

Skrins Meadow Bird Reserve

The Skrins meadow bird reserve between the villages of Wommels and Oosterlittens is a popular foraging and roosting spot for many birds. In the spring, the flower-filled grasslands are perfect for nesting.

Lytsewierrum (Lutkewierum)

Visit the terp village of Lytsewierrum, located at the end of a dead-end road. The village has a protected village view.
