Vegelinbossen Forests

The Vegelinbossen forests were planted on the sand ridge on which the village of St Nicolaasga sits. Mayor Johan Vegilin van Claerbergen arranged for the forests to be planted in 1722. Today this is a beautiful place to go walking, cycling, horse riding.

At one time the village of Ruigahuizen had a church and a bell tower. The old bell tower was demolished in 1920. A new one was built to replace it in 1956. The old bell was installed beneath the four-sided dome roof of the new bell tower.

Een fietsroute door de Friese Meren van 57 km waarbij weidse vergezichten over water en land voorbij komen, maar ook de bossen van Gaasterland passeren de revue. Combineer je fietstocht met een uitstapje naar Museum Joure, het Museum Sloten of het Woudagemaal in Lemmer dat op de werelderfgoedlijst van UNESCO staat. Onderweg passeert u de Vaste Burchtkerk van Wijckel waar het praalgraf van Menno van Coehoorn zich bevindt. Uiteraard lenen de vlecken (dorp met marktrechten, maar zonder stadsrechten) Joure en Lemmer en Elfstedenstadje Sloten zich uitstekend voor een tussenstop. Proef dan vooral de streekproducten bij lokale bedrijfjes en restaurants.
