Take a look
The Roman Catholic parish church in the village of Sint Nicolaasga is dedicated to Saint Nicholas of Myra. The church is a neo-Gothic cruciform basilica built in 1887 according to plans prepared by the Frisian architect Jan Doedes van der Weide, who was a student of the famous Pierre Cuypers. The tower consists of four sections and rises to a height of 61 metres. The organ built by Lodewijk Ypma in 1871 was originally installed in the Roman Catholic church in Akersloot and transferred to this church in 1975. The baptismal font was originally installed in the Sacred Heart of Jesus Church in The Hague and transferred to this church in 1973.
Stained glass windows
The church has a series of stained glass windows made in 1897 as well as windows made a century later by the artist J.M. Ydema.
Lourdes grotto
Behind the church there is a large replica of the grotto at Lourdes. It was built in 1933 according to a model created by Huite Huitema. The model was prepared at the request of the priest Joannes Bentla, who was an ardent devotee of the Virgin Mary. Huite Huitema was a parishioner whose wife suffered a great deal of illness. He often accompanied her to Lourdes where he took photos, so he knew exactly what the grotto looked like.
