Baard, a charming terp village in the green meadows of the Greidhoek.
Did you know that the residents are called 'Baarder katten' (Baarder cats)? The proverbial 'dogs' live in Leons. The reason to strip Baard of its right to administer justice 567 years ago was the ongoing disputes with the inhabitants of the neighboring Leons. Between both population groups, frequent fights occurred. Baarders and Leonsers lived like cats and dogs, it was said. The statue in the center commemorates these earlier times.
For centuries, Baard was dominated by the noble family Dekema, which owned its stins (fortified house) here. Now, the Dekemawei still reminds us of the family.
