Take a look

The Dijken bell tower stands in a small graveyard that is surrounded by a canal. The wooden bell tower with its four-sided dome roof is reached by walking along a dam with an ornately embellished wooden fence. There was once a little church here too. During the Second World War, the bell was stolen and carried off to Germany to be melted down. So the original bell tower was demolished. In 1984, a new bell tower was erected with a new bell. The graveyard was restored in 2002.

Free-standing bell towers are a typical feature in Friesland. They were presumably erected in areas that were too poor or had too few parishioners to build a church to ring a funeral toll for the dead. Free-standing bell towers were also built near churches without a tower and where churches or church towers were in ruins.
