Because the land here was reclaimed from a channel of the medieval Middelzee estuary, the surface water is still salty. So salt-loving plants such as salt marsh grass and brass buttons thrive here. In the spring the area attracts large numbers of black-tailed godwits, lapwings, skylarks and redshanks that nest here every year. Spring is also the time when you can enjoy the captivating spectacle of hares boxing. You can see them from the bird-watching hide and also from the road.
