The Terpensmole hasn't always been located near IJlst, and it hasn't always been named that way. The origin of the mill is in Grou, then Sneek, and it eventually ended up in IJlst.
The 'Minne Finne,' as it was called in Grou, was initially supposed to be relocated to Sneek. However, it was in such poor condition that they decided to completely rebuild the mill in the style of the Grouster mill in the Friesian city. In 1982, the construction was completed, and the mill was ceremoniously opened, with a black base and an orange upper part! Later, the mill was entirely painted green, and in Sneek, they gave it the name 'Himmole.'
Due to nearby tree planting and the expansion of the highway, the mill became unusable, and in 2010, it was decided to relocate it. A year later, the mill found a new home along the shell path between Sneek and IJlst, where, with the help of volunteers, it drains a polder. The mill is located near the well-known sawmill De Rat. During the relocation, the name was changed to 'Terpensmole,' after a mill that had previously stood at this location.
