The Sondeler Leien nature reserve is in Gaasterland. The small inland lake here probably formed when the waters of the former Zuiderzee broke through the dikes. In the past it was used as an inland waterway.
The varied peatland landscape, with its meadows, reed beds, dense shrubs and forest, is a favourite spot for birds. There is also a bird-watching hide so you can get a better view. The beauty of the nature here changes with the seasons. From November to April, the high water level of these marshy grasslands attracts both water birds and waders such as lapwings, black-tailed godwits, golden plovers and ruffs. There is also a fishing pier here for those who like to fish.
