In Hemelum there is a Russian Orthodox monastery dedicated to Saint Nicholas, Bishop of Myra, who was renowned for his ability to perform miracles.
The traditional dome and cross of the Orthodox Church are instantly recognisable from the street. The monastery consists of the former church and the grounds along the north wall. The building is divided into three sections. The smallest of the three sections right at the back is the former consistory room and attic. These are the monks’ living quarters, which are not open to the public. The middle section of the building houses the monastery church. The red crosses on the windows are visible from the outside. The section beneath the dome that faces the street contains the pilgrims’ quarters.
The church services are open to the public. If the light is on above the entrance to the monastery church it means a service is in progress and you can enter. Holy Communion can only be received by members of the Orthodox faith who are properly prepared.
