Wheelchair trail Bremen Wilderness
It may sound a bit inhospitable that Bremer Wilderness, but it is not. A well-trodden concrete path runs through this 47-hectare woodland in Gaasterland, south-west Friesland.
The gorse
The Bremer Wilderness has nothing to do with a German city. Its name comes from the gorse, a shrub with golden yellow flowers that used to grow there in abundance. The forest was established in the 19th century by the Van Swinderen family for timber extraction. Today, it is part of the Forestry Commission's land and is home to animals such as birds, deer and badgers.
Paved path
This route through and around the forest is easy to cover with a wheelchair, walker or pram. This is because you always walk on paved paths. And there is no need to get lost as you can always follow the hiking junctions.

Watch out for other road users
The concrete path through the forest also serves as a cycle path, so watch out for other road users. The northern part of the route goes along a small inner road, past some farms and a bell tower. Here too, you may encounter cyclists and even cars!
Dogs are allowed along, but on a leash to avoid disturbing other animals.
Enjoy the route through this beautiful forest!
