Workum - Bolsward | Elfstedenpad Hiking Trail: Section 7

(17.4 km)

From Workum you walk across reclaimed land threaded by countless drainage ditches and canals to the next of Friesland’s eleven cities – Bolsward. Here the skaters were completely exposed to the wind. Tailwinds sped them along to Bolsward but if there were headwinds, it was much harder to make headway.

You walk along the Tillefonne, a 16th-century church path. You pass the little museum villages of Ferwoude, Allingawier and Exmorra, all picturesquely situated in tranquil panoramic surroundings.

When you get to Bolsward, you will find that it is quite a large city by Frisian standards. It was founded on three artificial dwelling mounds or ‘terps’. The inviting terraces, range of shops and spectacular sights such as the remains of Broerekerk church all stand out. The Bat Fountain is positioned in front of the remains of Broerekerk church. You may be surprised to know that beer, whisky and Beerenburg liqueur are made in Bolsward.
