Round Sleattemer Mar

(28.6 km)

This cycle route takes you around the Sleattemer Mar, or Slotermeer lake. Slotermeer might make you think of a district in Amsterdam, but it is also one of the beautiful Frisian lakes, named after the town of Sloten.

Slotermeer (Sleattemer Mar) is sandwiched between Sloten, Balk and Woudsend. You will visit all three of these lively water sports towns during this cycle tour.

You start at the TOP in Woudsend and then cycle in a westerly direction to the hamlet of Indijk, where you can admire an old-fashioned bell tower on your left and where you can see the waters of the Fluessen on your right. If necessary, take a break right away at the beach on the Fluessen.

A little later, cross the N928 and cycle along the Slotermeer lake to Balk, also known as the butter village. In Balk, milk from the surrounding farms used to be processed into butter and traded. The village boasts a long canal along river Luts, with historic buildings on either side.

In Balk, turn left to pedal through the hamlet with the funny name de Bargebek (the pig's mouth) towards the Elfsteden town of Sloten. The Slotermeer lake always remains on your left during this ride and also just before Sloten there is another lovely little beach to take a break.

Once in Sloten, you can marvel at the pretty buildings along the canal. But historic windmills, a town hall and a fountain can also be admired in Sloten.

You leave the miniature town in an easterly direction. At the tall radio tower of Spannenburg, you take the cycle path along the N354 back to Woudsend. This is a dull stretch for a while, but not to worry: in Woudsend, cosy terraces await you on the water of the Ie.
