Take a look

Along the shore of Lake IJsselmeer there are three nature reserves on the sandflats outside the dykes. When Lake IJsselmeer was still the Zuiderzee, these coastal sandflats were flooded by the tides.   Now they are part of Lake IJsselmeer and are overgrown with vegetation. The Makkumerzuidwaard and Makkumernoordwaard nature reserves run along the shore near the village of Makkum. The Makkumernoordwaard nature reserve is only open to group tours. The coastline here is spectacularly beautiful. The tides and waves of the Zuiderzee created a sandy shore strewn with shells that once housed molluscs that lived in the sea. Today this area is home to rare tundra voles. The wet reed landscape also provides ideal conditions for orchids.
