Take a look
Heerenveen is the most sports-oriented and largest village in Friesland!
"It Fean," as the Frisians simply say, is an enormous village with 30,000 residents, which is quite large by Frisian standards. It is much larger than most Frisian Elfstedenstadjes (Eleven Cities).
However, the village never received city rights in the past. It originated in 1551, during the peat extraction period in Southeast Friesland.
Heerenveen is truly a sports-oriented village, thanks to the Abe Lenstra Stadium, where SC Heerenveen plays its home matches. But Heerenveen is also renowned for Thialf ice stadium, where skaters compete for various national and international titles every winter.
In addition to its athletic reputation, Heerenveen is also a great place for shopping, with a lively center featuring various shops, and you can enjoy excellent dining at one of the many restaurants. Heerenveen is home to several beautiful monuments, such as the stately Crackstate, which houses the municipal office.
From Heerenveen, you can quickly reach the beautiful forests of Oranjewoud, providing an excellent opportunity for hiking.
